FUELLING POVERTY TRAILER #1

Wednesday 21 November 2012

Here I am...

Here I am...I stared on as my friends played their fifa 13 and made comments 2d players in the TV,as though they were not d ones controlln them...oh well...my mind was elsewhere,I had had one heck of a day and jst wanted to chill and dance the stress away. Contrary 2norm,my home wasn't feeln as cozy as usual...I did not wanna be there.Thank God its d wknd, else I'd have had a shitty week...I should mention that I had a good week though.Just yst I was d perfect gf,went 2d market durn my office break and later that night,a pot of stew, two soups and 3plates of amala away.I took a long shower at around midnight and decided that would be my shower for the day.I laid down on the Orthopaedic bed,all my joints screaming their pain. Here I am,yells in the air from those who have scored goals in this video game, thinking about my close friend who can't get over her ex and he dsnt gv a fuck about her,I v advised her 2cut off all connectn from him and jst occupy her mind with other things so her thoughts don't drift 2wrds him,but v been in her sort of situation and I know its easier said than done, the task is ultimately up 2her 2will herself from vn feelns for him....I drifted off again 2 the fight that ensued midday btw my friend and is mum,it was intense, unsightly and downright sad as they yelled at one another @d top of their voices, his other friend and I had stayed in d room initially with the TV on high volume trying to ignore their yells, like children with drunk parents hide during a fight,we had to intervene eventually and it was disheartening. They finally cooled off and went to their seperate rooms,we left the house.I needed to have a talk with him,but how best 2do it?He has a quick temper and is touchy about such issues. On the other hand,my Carpenter and plumber had jst finished their work demarcating my kitchen from that of my filthy neigbours!...story 4anoda day...I paid them their balance and called the cleaner to come clean the place 2mw.I did not v d energy and besides, spiders and cobwebs give me d creeps and dt was d major filth. We went in2 my house(more of a room tho-Self contained things).I told him in my most calm and soft voice that I wanted to talk to him,and I did not want him to get upset.I eventually made him see reason, after also bribing him with a stick of  cigarette(which v been tryn 2mk him quit) and escorting him to play dis Fifa 13 game..Here I am...

So Far this October

Things in my life have been good so far, everything seems to be falling into place just fine, i have some aspects to work on of course and i'm doing that. I have been keeping to making my To-do lists daily and that has been really helpful for me getting things done (as y'all know i'm the Queen of procrastination, i'm trying to change though). I started taking swimming lessons last weekend as its been on my to-do list for so long and i do love water, whether lake, river, sea or beach, sometimes i think i'm a mamiwater (mermaid)..lol..that's one of the main things i miss about Lagos, the beaches!!Anyways, asides that i'm in a good place relationship-wise too and that is good for my general well-being (Everyone loves to be loved and happy after all) money-wise i'm ok, it can be better though but i'm thankful for what i have, work-wise too is ok, i'm feeling a bit stunted and too in routine but we got some projects coming up so that's gonna change soon, God-wise i rate very poor i have to admit, i talk to him only once in a while and i haven't been to church in some weeks, i Need to reconnect. I have been able to keep in touch with my close friends esp Antonia (I consider a blessing in my life and even a sister sef, cos as they say there is that friend that sticks closer than a brother, it is she.lol) & old classmates thanks to Skype, Fb, Twitter, et al and i'm workn on communicating better with my immediate and extended family. I have a serious issue with calls, dunno why really, it may be thanks to my University's rules but i'm sure there are also other factors that have contributed to my calling habit. Phones were not allowed in my university so we'd have to queue up @the call centre or wall phones to make calls. I think the ban on phones is unnecessary, i mean we have access to the internet! how bad can having a phone be really?? i think its  more of an ego/pride thing of the chancellor not wanting to go back on a statement made in anger and also it has gained the school some kinda weird popularity. Moving on, i got a phone in my 2nd or 3rd year in school though, but was very selective about calls i made 'cos i wanted just a selected few to be able to reach me, and i think that has followed me till date, now though anyone can get your mobile number so i'm left with the option to either pick or ignore the call and i ignore calls most times. Funny thing is when mobile phones first came on the Nigerian scene i was spoilt with calls by my 2 first bfs, they'd call me for 20mins @least and i always wanted to talk on the phone. Oh well, i'm trying to change now and i do my best to return the calls i ignore, but the worst part is those that don't call, 'cos i don't bother reaching out (even family members), i just think and think about calling them and i eventually don't. I'm still cracking my head on how to solve this or then again, maybe i should just stick to SMS, mails (i hate seeing unread mails!!..lol) and the likes.. That's it for now..still striving to be better and will get dere by his grace...

Trip to the UK (Part 1)

So here’s for all my dedicated blog reader’s who have been on my case to put up a post. Thank you for being dere despite my very lazy and procrastinating attitude. I take full blame lol and yh i finally got around to putting some music on here. Enjoy...
So a whole lot has happened since I my last blog post, I fell in and outta ‘love’ or whatever u guys call it. I took a leave from work and went to the uk to see some friends and relatives briefly. My post is gonna be mainly on my trip anyways. Everyone knows I love travelling afterall…giggles. I have a pending post on my trip to Ghana which was before this last trip. I’ll do dat after this because its long overdue and I may start forgetting all I wanted to share. My travels have all been great experiences so far and I’m grateful for the opportunity to embark on them.
My UK trip started out like play like play, I had told my very good friend Antonia the last time she came to Nigeria that I would very much like to visit her before the next time she came around, and another of my friends, Habib who had come for a brief internship had said it would be nice if I came to the UK for a bit. He explained that the process was easy and it would not cost me so much if I booked my ticket early. He even offered to me the services of the travel agent he usually uses when travelling. The final push I needed was speaking to another friend, Esiri, and he told me to meet his mum, who is a lawyer and had helped out in countless applications. I was overjoyed as I had asked some colleagues at the office to help me out with the application and the process and they had all been very vague. I would finally get experienced adult assistance; I’m that kinda person that prefers someone experienced putting me through something than going in on my own.
I went on the internet to the visa application file, read up on the types of applications they had, the guidelines and the fees involved. It did not seem like a difficult process but then again one had to be careful and precise in order to not get rejected. I have travelled to a few places without much stress and I did not want this to be any different. I informed my boss of my intention to travel, he has been to several places including the UK severally and I also needed a leave from work if I was to travel. He informed me that there was an event holding in the UK that I could attend with him and that processing my visa through the office would ease the process. Between several consultations with my boss and my friend’s mum, I was able to get all my documents in order. I went to submit my documents on December 23, my birthday and it was a long ass process!! from getting a queue no. to submitting my documents (that took the longest time), then paying for the visa application and finally getting my biometrics done. I finally left there around late afternoon. I had gotten a number of gifts including a cake (from my favorite bakery and in my favorite color) from a close friend around midnight and another in the evening from my cousin in Lagos. It was a good day overall. I stopped by the office and shared some cake for my colleagues and bosses and visited some friend with cake too. I received numerous calls, texts and Facebook and Twitter messages which is the norm on my birthday. Anyways enough about what led to my going there, let’s get to the koko. I tracked my application online and went to pick it up on January 21 and it was no surprise really that I got the visa with all the plenty preparation I put into it. In my mind I was like, the first step is over, I don get visa, na plane ticket and spending money remain now..lol..The visa was for 6 months and was going to expire in July, so I had about 5 months to go ‘cos I knew the Olympics was in July and ticket prices would be crazy, talkless of the crowd in London where I was gonna spend majority of my holiday. I told my boss I had gotten my visa and would like to apply for my leave and he told me it’d be best to wait till June before I go ‘cos we had a new project I had to work on and that it’d be summer there by then. I did not even have the funds at the moment anyway so I was cool with going in June, I would have adequate time to scout for a cheap ticket and inform my cousin and friends that I was coming so they would prepare accordingly. I informed them I was coming, I was able to nab a 162k return ticket :D.
I applied for my leave of approximately a month then went shopping for all the naija things my cousin and friends had said I should bring for them, from Indomie, goldernmorn, peak milk, kilichi, and groundnut to neomedrol, black soap, ori (shea butter), Dunlop slippers(I forgot this though), padlock *smh ,fura and man shanu. My cousin came in from Lagos some days to my trip so she helped out and one of my friends used his car to drive me around for my use :D (what a sweetheart!!). We finished buying everything around 11pm, I’m so lucky to have friends that don’t mind sacrificing their time for me. He dropped me off @another friend’s place, we moved all d stuff out of his car, said our goodbyes and he left. I had a movie date with this friend on our favorite series Game of Thrones!!! (I am a series freak!lol). we were to see the final episode of the 2nd season. He had gotten pizza and icecream and I came bearing the soft copy of the series. It was a great night and episode and I was brimming full!!!i had to go home though and finish up packing ‘cos my flight was a morning flight. We got ready to leave and on getting outside, his neighbor had blocked his car, he went to their house and the wife said she can’t disturb her husband when he’s sleeping! See me see wahala o! dis was like dat kind 1am o!i just dey pity myself, me dat I love sleep, I was just consoled by the fact that my cousin was home so she’d wake me up @least, if I attempted to oversleep. My friend was pissed, with good reason, it started drizzling later, we honked and honked his car horn with the aim of waking the sleepy husband up since his wife was so scared to do it. We’ll never know if he woke up or not but we got the attention of some of his white neighbours who loved their sleep so much they volunteered to drop me @home. I think I got home around 1:30am and I was sooooooooo exhausted but I still had to pack!! My cuz helped out and we finished around 3pm before I collapsed on the bed and embraced the sweet sleep I was craving. It was too soon!!!i’m sure I had not slept for 2mins wen I felt my cousin poking me that it was 5am and I had to leave for the airport in a bit if I was to make my flight. I grudgingly got up and looked @her with hate in my eyes like it was her fault I could not get more sleep, she wasn’t even bothered! she went straight back to sleep once she saw I was up and outta the bed. I called my friend that was supposed to drop me @d airport, he came some mins later and we stuffed my luggage in his boot. I had just one big soft bag, my laptop bag and my handbag. We got to the airport just in time, just to see them turning people away from the entrance and telling them to come bk at 7pm!!!They had to be kidding me!!After ditching my sleep, the most annoying part was they gave no explanation which was very unlike British Airways, usually dey’d send a mail or something. Anyways I was kinda happy, I went back home, dropped my luggage and slept like a baby till around 3pm. I visited some friends then got a ride around 6pm. The flight did not take off till 11pm. Thank God I was able to corner a socket and I had my blackberry and ipad handy to keep me occupied. Oh yeah before I forget, they said my luggage was in excess when I weighed it, yepaa!!!mi o ni owo o, I thought to myself, but I had come with another bag in case this happened, so I moved some things into that back and all was well in my world again! *whew, close call. It was a smooth 6hr flight and I had no complains about my seat. I slept like a baby till we landed @Heathrow!!!
Stay tuned for Part 2.....Toodles!XooX

Senor Don Gato

I was just chillin at the office doing some work when my colleague started humming a song and my brain took over and i started singing it. I could not believe i still knew the words to the song. It was a song i had known when i was a child and i could remember it vividly 'cos that was the first time i ever heard the word 'solar plexus' and i had a very active imagination so i had imagined all the things that happened to the cat in the song.
Here is the song.enjoy.

Oh Señor Don Gato was a cat,
Meow
On a high red roof Don Gato sat.
Meow
He went there to read a letter,
Meow, meow, meow
Where the reading light was better,
Meow, meow, meow
T'was a love note for Don Gato.
How he adored the lady cat, (alternate line: "I adore you," wrote the lady cat.)
Meow
Who was fluffy, white, and nice and fat.
Meow
There was not a sweeter kitty
Meow, meow, meow
In the country or the city
Meow, meow, meow
And she said she'd wed Don Gato.

Oh, Don Gato jumped so merrily,
Meow
He fell off the roof and broke his knee.
Ow!
Broke his ribs and all his whiskers,
Meow, meow, meow
And his little solar plexus,
Meow, meow, meow
Aye caray!!! cried poor Don Gato. (alternate line: "Ay carramba!" cried Don Gato.)

Well the doctors all came on the run,
Meow
Just to see if something could be done.
Meow
And they held a consultation,
Meow, meow, meow
About how to save their patient,
Meow, meow, meow
How to save Señor Don Gato.

But in spite of everything they tried,
Meow
Poor Señor Don Gato up and died.
Meow
Oh it wasn't very merry,
Meow, meow, meow
Going to the cemetery,

Meow, meow, meow
For the end of poor Don Gato. (alternate line: For the ending of Don Gato.)
As the funeral passed the market square,
Meow
Such a smell of fish was in the air.
Meow
Though the funeral was slated,
Meow, meow, meow
He became re-animated,
Meow, meow, meow
He came back to life Don Gato.
(optional refrain: For he had nine lives, Don Gato.)

I had to google it to remember the 3rd stanza though.lol.it definitely brought back some good ol' memories i did not know was tucked away.

P.S i don't like cats, they give me the creeps especially when i see them at night.but i love me some Puss in Boots anytime!lmcbo

Take Heart Thou Bereaved

It is never an easy experience to lose a loved one and i truly sympathize with all those who have had to cope with the loss of a loved one. Three of my very close friends each lost a loved one on between Wednesday, March 14, 2012 and Friday, March 23, 2012. I felt their pain but not the way they were feeling it, i heard about one of the deaths on Saturday and the other on Monday. I felt heartbroken, one of them lost his dad  in a helicopter crash in Jos, i heard about it from a colleague in passing and could not believe it, the man had just been promoted to DIG about 2weeks back, he had served in the Police Force for more than 30yrs!this was his time to shine, i had had the opportunity of meeting on several occasions, he was an extremely nice and amiable person too say the least, my heart goes out to the family members esp his wife. They were quite close and even the kids! i pray God strengthens them and helps them get through the huge loss. I'v been calling F everyday since the incident and calling when i can't call just to make sure he's ok and doesn't do anything crazy 'cos he was real close to his dad. I also called his sibling to offer my condolences but didn't have the heart to call his mum, i had read in the papers that she had not even spoken since the incident.so sad. My other very dear friend N lost her 7-day old niece due to some miscalculations by doctors, its so disheartening that in this modern day, things like this still occur. The baby's mum had been diagnosed with the wrong genotype so when the baby was born and needed blood they discovered the genotype was different and that blood was not available in the bloodbank and the baby was gone before they arrived with blood. so so sad, i had been looking forward to the birth of the baby as i had watched his mum's belly grow for all of 9months and to have the baby born was a ray of hope just to have him snatched away! I can't even imagine how his mum felt, all the pain and stress she had gone through then having to bury the child. Her hubby did not take it well either, he had seen his son with a full head of hair that looked like his mum, N had bought so many clothes for him on her trip to the UK, she had even returned some things just to buy him more things. I did my best to console her and saw the family briefly and extended my condolences to her.I heard about this on Saturday after i had not seen her at work on Friday or received a call/text from her that she won't be coming and my spirit had told me something was wrong and it had to do with the baby, unfortunately i wasn't wrong.
The last I heard about was from my friend/colleague M, he had told me of his nephew who was always falling ill as he had Sickle Cell Anemia. The little boy had had a stroke about 2times and was not fairing so well, the last crisis he had was more severe than the others though and after several attempts to get him better, he died. I felt so sad when he gave me the news but i also felt relieved for the boy and his mum. He was just 4yrs old and too young to be put through that much suffering and his mum was the one that was always there with him as his father lived in another state. I asked him if they had told the boy's sister about his death and he said they had and that she had been crying daily since he was taken to the hospital and when they finally told her about the death the girl had cried really hard but after a while she stopped crying and would just make reference to him whenever she remembered something they used to do together. I wept in my heart when he told me this, i asked him how he was taking it but from the look on his face i could see it was not so well, cos he had been like a father to the boy since the man was hardly ever around.I did my best to console him.
I haven't lost too many people close to me in my life, just my Grandparents, of which my GrandPa's own hurt the most and i couldn't bring myself to cry at his or my GrandMa's funeral.Only one loss has broken me down completely and even then i had to be strong 'cos i more or less faced the loss alone.Another person was a Secondary School Friend but we had been apart for about 6-7yrs and though it hurt that she had left this world for good, it dint hurt hard enough for me not to breathe. Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, i did not cry initially when i heard the news but some days later while listening to their songs i let the tears flow. Crying is a sort of cleanser for me, so when i do it flows.funny thing is i tear up when i'm upset which is why i usually keep quiet or walk away when someone gets me worked up 'cos if i start speaking, the rivers are just gonna flow from my tear ducts but that's a different kinda cry to when it comes from my soul. I hope all my friends get the strength to cope with their individual losses.

Take Heart My Friends.

Monday Night in town

It was my darling friend's birthday and it happened to fall on a Monday!!of all the days! what could i do but celebrate the addition of another year to S's life. We started our night around 11pm, he came to pick me from home and we went to De-Carribean with his cousins, some of his friends were already there waiting for us. We ordered drinks (Hennessy,Baileys,Chapman, etc) and small chops (peppered gizzard, beef, kidney). The night started out with us sitting around and a bit of chitchat then as the DJ got real hot with the music and we started to dance. It was loads and loads of fun, i danced and danced and one of his cousins (the married one) showed that she still knew her onions! She left after a few hours 'cos she has a husband and 3kids to attend to, we on the other hand continued to rock away, some more friend's of S came around and we all mingled, then his bday mate came around, long story short, there were a lot of peeps and we had loads of fun dancing. We left there around 3am and drove to Aramis, i have to say i had no idea how vibrant the night life was in Abuja! especially on a monday, the streets were lit, the clubs around had their entrances crowded. i had to wonder if all these people had nothing better to do and if not, why they were not asleep in their houses. Young people that looked like they were in Secondary School were smoking and running loose and wild! When we entered Aramis, it was brimming full! i had to wonder, we did not stay there for up to 10 mins. It was already around 4am and as much as i hated to be a buzz kill, sleep was calling out @me real loud and i had to be at work for 8am the next day so i had to tell the birthday boy that i had to go. He decided to drop one of his other friends and i at home and his friend's place was quite some distance from town. What happened after this was jst too funny for me to even laugh (it wasn't funny at the time though but u know how u can just find humor in things past). The police stopped us at a popular roundabout for their usual stop and search procedure, on our way to drop V at home, we were 2 girls and a guy(he was driving) in the car,  all our papers were complete and my friend had his license on him, i noticed things were taking longer than usual and i was very uncomfortable and cranky 'cos it was about 4am and i had to be at work for 8am later that morning, i wanted the whole thing over with ASAP so i could hug some hours of sleep and be a bit useful at work later. Next thing i heard murmurings and they were asking my friend who we were and where we were coming from, in my mind i'm like how the fuck is this any of their business!!!our papers are complete, he has his license, their work was done so what was all these extra stupid questions for. They came around and were murmuring stupid things to V and I but we ignored them, i heard my friend telling them we are his friends and we just got back from an outing. They said we should follow them to their station and despite asking severally what our offence was, we got no replies. We had to follow them to avoid any trouble after all they had guns and we had done nothing wrong for them to charge us with so it will all be settled at the station, just more of our time wasted. Anyone who knows the Nigerian Police especially the ones that stand on the road, knows their behaviour, half the time they involve u in pointless chitchat or try to get a bribe out of you. Long story short we followed them to the so called station with one of them seated in the front seat. My morning was slowly becoming a nightmare!there's nothing i hate more than having anything to do with the police. We got to the place they said was their station and it happened to be some kind of environmental control place i really dunno what they call it, they told us to drive in and we did and we waited for them to come and table their case, so we'd get outta there. You will not believe after we drove in these policemen left!!!! they did not even speak with the officers in the place, they just left so we had to face those ones and tell them we wanted to leave. One of the fools there said we had to wait there till morning since the officers had left as they cannot release us since they did not know our offence!! This was where i lost my cool, i had been seated quietly all the while observing their folly play out. I got out of the car and threatened the officer that i'd be making calls to people that they would not like to see, my friend was also yelling and furious and was already making calls, we asked to see the officer in charge or else all hell would break lose as it was only in this Goddamned Country that one would be taken into custody with no offence committed. About 5mins later, the officer in charge comes out and we manage to calm down and explain the situation to him, he said it was probably because of the way we were dressed that they had brought us there and i pointed out that he had NOT picked us from the street!! we had left our seperate houses, met at the club, had fun and were heading home to rest. He finally stated that the policemen had no reason for bringing us there as it was only in cases where prostitutes were being picked up by men that such arrests could be made. He said even if we were naked in the car, it was none of the police officer's business and that was not their work, he apologized and said he did not want any trouble and could not hold us in custody as we had committed no offence and the stupid officers who brought us there had not bothered to enter and inform them before leaving. I had never feel so insulted and mistreated!! I have heard of police injustice severally but this was a first hand experience! They had used the fact that they were authorities and had weapons to bully us for no reason and they had wasted our time! I was boiling as we got back into the car, we finally dropped V off and had to go pick his other 2 friends at the club before heading home. He told them the story and they were furious, they said they wished they had been there as they would have made a lot of trouble, Trust me, they would have, I'm glad they were not in the car as we would have spent more time there arguing since both of them were quite high, we passed the roundabout the stupid policemen had stopped us and they were all gone!bloody fools and assholes!! I just wanted to get some sleep, it was already 5:30am. I finally got home and got the much needed rest, needless to say i got to work an hour late but i wasn't useless (Thank God!) oh and let me give a description of what V and I's dressing that was considered sooooooo inappropriate, I had on a blue jean tube gown with a sweetheart neckline and a black pantyhose with flat shoes, i had left the house with a pashmina (scarf) but left it on his friends neck. V was wearing a cream loose sleeveless sequined top with jeans and a flat shoe. So please be the judge if these dressings rank as inappropriate! Anyway that was our ordeal with the Nigerian Police that are supposed to protect their citizens who instead mistreat and take advantage of them, even though there are some good ones among them. This birthday is definitely one S is gonna remember for a long time.

I do

I love attending weddings!! especially traditional weddings. There's so much colorful procedure to follow regardless of the tribe. The highlight of church weddings on the other hand is the reception, that is definitely what seals the deal for the guests or for me at least. The venue, colorful decorations, food and drinks, setting, music and new twists the couples add to their ceremony. I love watching the couple dance too, whether dancing into the reception venue or when they dance with guests and get sprayed money. It is stressful when you're the brides friend o, especially when its dancing time because u have to keep bending down to pick the money the couple is sprayed 'cos it supposedly belongs to the bride. I also love all the drama of the couple feeding each other and cutting cake and the bride wearing the cap for her husband and all that charade (cos truth is that's not how they are gonna do it when they are left alone, its just tradition). Sadly i have attended majorly Yoruba traditional weddings where the groom comes with his friends to dobale (prostrate) for the bride's parents and so much money is spent before he gets to see his bride (you have to attend one to understand what i'm saying). For Igbo weddings i know the bride gets to collect a cup of palmwine from her father while her groom sits in the midst of a crowd and she has to search him out, kneel and give him the palmwine before they dance out together, i'm sure there's more to it but that's really the major part, i think. I happened to attend an Efik/Yoruba wedding once and it was delightful! The traditionaldancers had on beautiful attires and the dance was mesmerizing. Did i mention that another thing that gets me? The ATTIRES!! OMG!! the Aso-Oke's, the George's, the Damasks, the Ankara's the Coral beads, Walking Sticks,Fans,Red caps, etc you name it!! Its soo richly beautiful seeing everyone adorn their culture in attires! Then drummers also get me, i mean the local drummers who beat their talking drums and you cant help moving to the rhythm, you should see me at work shaking my ikebe and small bum bum to their beats...lol. Then the local bands too when they are good, they are real good and i can komole and pakuromo well well!
Then again weddings have a bittersweet feel, you reminisce on when u got married, if u are married and how things have been after marriage (its not always as rosy as it seems),even when rosy u think of the days of young love et al or you think about when u'l find ur own man or if u have ur man when u'll walk down the aisle with and have your own moment in the spotlight. Regardless though, its still always fun and an avenue to meet new people and make friends and rebond with forgotten family members. Any which ways its always a lovely occasion even if food doesn't reach you or family members are stressing you out (that's when its a family wedding) or there's drama going on about souvenirs (there always is) things are not going quite as planned. The koko is the bride and groom are now husband and wife and its all about them! I have been a bridesmaid to some friends and cousins of mine and apart from money spent on dresses, shoes and jewellry, i always manage to enjoy myself.
Sometimes i want a lavish wedding, other times not 'cos it can be some much stress worrying about many guest  (catering, sitting arrangement, souvenir distribution, etc). Sometimes i think i'd prefer a quiet 30 people outdoor wedding but then again i attend some lavish weddings and want one with all my heart! In reality though, i'm probably gonna end up having a big wedding, my mum comes from a large family and has about 20 siblings and 5 step-mums, her dad is late, my dad on the other hand is from a fairly large family too, with about 15 siblings and 2 step-mums! Now some of the siblings are married with kids i.e my cousins. This bunch of my mother and father's family is already a crowd thats minus the extended family o! My mum has bee in the civil service for more than 15 years so she has made her share of friends there, add those ones to those coming, then my dad's friends from the Banking Industry and Ikoyi club (he's been a member since before i could breathe). Then add the friends i've made from Secondary school to University to NYSC to Office, etc. That one huge number mehn! and we haven't even put my husband's people into consideration o! The only way i'm avoiding a huge wedding is if i do it in some place people can't get to easily like a far away island or something! Anyways, i will cross that bridge when i get to it.

I attended my boss's daughter's wedding and enjoyed myself as it has been a while i attended a wedding and i'd been looking for an excuse to get all dolled up and rock my native attire and there's no beta place to look fine and be admired than at a wedding. Enjoy the pics. You can also view my Pinterest page (http://pinterest.com/jemimahnaa/weddings/) for some pics of those really cool traditional attires i was talking about and you understand my love for them.

Head Massage!

I'm totally hooked on my new hairdresser. This is the first time i'm having a male hairdresser and i must say i'm thoroughly impressed. First of all he's extremely patient and this was what had me going back to his salon after my first encounter there. He attended to me so well even though it was my first time there. The salon is just about 2 minutes walking distance from my office so i decided to try them out one of the days i was less busy at work and wanted to wash my hair, i ended up washing, steaming and blowdrying my hair. Good for me 'cos i wasn't missed at work. First thing i loved was that he handled my hair with the utmost care and anyone that knows me knows i cherish my nappy hair and only place them in reliable hands and once u mess up with them, u never get to touch them again!! That said, he had passed the first test test. The second test was when he had shampooed my hair and was washing it, some hairdressers usually use their nails when washing the hair and end up hurting the scalp, he on the other hand had his nails trimmed real low and used his finger tips instead. The third test was when he was conditioning my hair and this i must say was the deal closer!! He massaged my scalp and i must say it felt real good!! *Happy sigh...lol...and also he asked if i wanted warm or cold water unlike some that just assume and use what they feel, he used warm water all through and at the end used cold water. It was awesome!!!!!!! Pardon my use of so many exclamation marks, i'm just trying to use it to express how i felt. Also he did not complain that my hair was natural or try to make me texturize my hair like most first time hairdressers do instead he combed and straightened it with care and i felt like a Queen when he was done. He's also quite patient with me. I ended up tipping him after the whole
session and i've become his customer ever since and i must say i'm enjoying my hair massage and getting value for my money and tips. He made me realise how sweet a head massage can be and i've tested out my theory on a few volunteers and a lucky few will enjoy the luxury of getting one from me. ;) Also i can stop by at the salon during my lunch periods since the salon is close to my office.
Who says life aint sweet!

Yaaoch Part 2 (Not Really)

Soooo i went to the spa again for my second waxing session and there was no yaooching from me this time. It was just like Smile (my waxer) had said, that after the first time it is not as painful. I went in there during work hours (yh..yh) 'cos i was less busy and my boss was AWOL. I did the same things i did the last time i.e underarms, brazillian. I decided to do my legs too, i.e the lower half, i used to use Veet and it was ok but i was in an experimenting mood and it did not even hurt. It felt like lil pin pricks, i have a high pain threshold anyways so that may have contributed.
This is the longest i've lasted comfortable without needing to shave and if you check the time between my last post and this, you'll see its about a month and some days. I also noticed that my underarms are not as dark as they used to be. yipee!!! anyways, summary is, the procedure did not hurt much and i was done in less than an hour and back to work and i can forget about shaving for about another month.

My Stars are Aligned

The lines are falling in straight for me, or are they.. its nothing serious but people i thought had forgotten 'bout me seem to be springing up from everywhere and remembering i exist. Some are even dreaming about me!hian! It all started about 2-3weeks ago when i received a call, the number was unknown but i picked up anyway, just to hear a familiar voice, i couldn't believe my ears so i waited for confirmation. I said 'who is this' and he said 'hi, its F'. I was like wow!!this was not even on the list of last calls i expected to receive today. We exchanged pleasantries and he went on to relay the dream he had about me. We hadn't seen in about 4years or spoken in about a year or 2. So u can imagine my surprise. He told me he dreamt he had killed someone for me...weird.lol. anyway he came into Abuja later and we saw and caught up on what had been happening in our lives. It was really nice. Next thing i know M calls me and i'm like ok...Why are all these peeps remembering me around the same period all of a sudden..Then S calls and U calls and B calls and J calls! J i haven't spoken to in a longer while than U, B and S. He said he was just calling to check on me and i was like ok. U and i had been having a fight and he's that kinda proud person that does not like to say he's sorry first, even when he knows he's wrong, anyways he surprised me and called! the T and I have also started talking more often and i must say i'm enjoying it. M has also been calling me more often than he used to and its nice. F also sent an SMS to me after keeping mute for a long period over God knows what! i wonder why guys do that! Yh, so that's it.

I know this happens to a lot of people when people that seem to have forgotten about you just start calling again outta the blues. Maybe it has to do with astronomy or some stars of mine lining up right.doesn't really matter. I'm enjoying the attention though..*wink wink
Seems the same thing is happening to my friend T also.

Leap Year and a New Month

A Leap year is a year with 366 days i.e a year with an extra day, February 29, added to make up the difference between the 365-day calendar and the actual duration of the Earth's orbit of the Sun.
Leap years occur every four years, except for years ending in 00 that are not divisible by 400.

[Probably because any given date falls two days later than in the preceding year, instead of one]
(Microsoft® Encarta® 2009)
I wonder how people born on February 29 feel though, they gotta wait every four years to celebrate their birthday technically. Anyways, what does it matter, as long as we are alive.

Welcome to a New month too people. Make the best of it.

This year seems to be moving pretty fast or is it just me? maybe..

All the best y'all...XooX

SlimKicker

I consider myself slightly fit and as much as i try to do more to keep fit and be healthy so many obstacles stand in my way. I have found different maneuvers around them though, for instance i take the stairs at any opportunity instead of the elevator or escalator. I try to drink a lot of water,i' m not really a soda person anyways, i take juice instead. I try to eat have a balanced diet but that's kinda tough 'cos it'll involve me cooking and i can be very lazy when it comes to that (i admit). I leave for work early and come back worn out, I just eat whatever is available or have snacks/chocolate or go to bed like that. At work i eat a fairly balanced diet but lets be real that's just 1 meal outta the 3 i should be having. I don't have issues with my weight, i just wanna be healthy.

Exercise is another challenge i'm facing now. I'm considering joining a gym seriously. While i was in school i was super fit! I used to take long walks, jog, do sit-ups,leg-ups and a bit of yoga. I have to say i had some time on my hands though and i had friends to motivate me. Now though work and social activities, etc don't give me much time, but if there's one thing i've learnt,it's that there'l never be time for anything except you make extra effort to create time.

Anyways, i intend to join a gym asap and once my house hunt is complete and i have my own space, i will cook more. I also wanna start swimming again, dancing, etc basically get involved in fun activities that help one stay fit.Dance or play golf  or box some dude on Xbox or do some random exercise on Wii.
I came across this site my friend sent me http://slimkicker.com/ and i intend to use it to track my progress and explore all the fun challenges it entails. Please Enjoy and i wish you all the best in your pursuit to be fit and healthy.

Another Legend is Gone :(

I can't believe Whitney Houston is dead! and she was just 48years old! She was more or less in her prime...1st Michael Jackson now Whitney, its soooo sad!
I really felt she was better and going to have an awesome comeback after all her drug drama. The Friday before she died, i was in a Whitney mood throughout work, i played her songs throughout, just for my friend to wake me very early on sunday with the news of Whitney's death. It did not sink in at first, i thot it was one of those pranks people play saying celebrities are dead till the celebs come out to say they are hale and hearty...sadly, this was not one of those, her death became more apparent as i saw it all over the news and music channels were playing her best songs as a tribute to her. As i listened to her songs, it was as if she was alive again. Had it not been for drugs, etc, this rare gem would have remained with us. People say we pay more attention when someone dies, we play their songs, watch their movies, things that used to belong to them or that they were involved in become very expensive and we are still willing to purchase or have them. I think its because we just have not been able to come to terms with how final death is, we can't believe that person we spent time with, mocked, laughed with and shared memories (good/bad) is gone forever, so we try to find anything that will make us feel their presence and what other way is there to do this than look at pictures, listen to their voice and watch videos they were in. It makes death seem unreal to relive the moments  that have been captured. I think pictures and videos are one of the best things that happened to human beings. We can capture precious moments and at a glance at these photos and videos, we can literally go back in time and relive that moment. If you go through my blog u'l notice i use photos and videos a lot, i can't help it. I love taking pictures, nothing professional or touched up just something i can look back on and smile or cry.
I wish Whitney's daughter and mother all the strength in this world 'cos i learnt they were real close to her, i can't imagine how they must be feeling right now especially with all the news in the media about Whitney being unstable and her death being shocking but not surprising. Regardless they have lost a loved one and i can imagine how that feels, i even feel for Bobby Brown even though i'm not a fan of his and i think he had a bad influence on her with her use of drugs and all, i'm sure he is not in the best place right now.

As i watched her videos on TV and especially her rendition of the American National Anthem at some superbowl event, it was very intense to say the least and you could see the passion and fluidity when she sang the anthem.

I love all her old school songs but the one i have been listening to over and over is 'i look to you'.It just says so much without trying and the lyrics of most of her songs follow the same pattern. Even her movies 'the bodyguard', 'the preacher's wife', and 'waiting to exhale'.

She was a strong black woman and was a role model for many in and out of the music industry despite all that she went through. She wasn't perfect, had her many flaws and personal struggles but her impact was greatly felt, she won all the awards you could think off and reached heights that most musicians only dream about. I guess we should thank Clive Davis for allowing us experience Whitney's out of this world voice.

May her soul Rest in Peace

Just anoda Valentine's day

Exchange of gifts..bla bla bla...and the day comes and goes... i'm happy its a workday

http://tamikoadyms.blogspot.com/search/label/Valentine%27s%20day

Is it really a special day or it has become a cliche?

Do we have to pick just one day to show love to our dear ones in material form or should we embrace making it a habit to do this daily. Truth is while we may be waiting for February 14 to come, our loved ones may not wait around.

Show love whenever you can and to whoever you can...Xoxo

Yaaaaoooch!!!!!!!! (even with a high Pain Threshold)

....and so i waxed!

I no know who send me message o...I was bored at work and the headache i had been having at one side of my head since 4am was just beginning to dull out. I did a mental run-through of all the stuff i had to do and the one bugging me was that i had to SHAVE!! hairy underarms are not sexy on guys or gals!! but we all know how annoying and dulling it can be to do routine stuffs, as much as we try we lax a bit and next thing u know, u wanna wear a tank top and that hair is all over the place saying 'i told you so'.

Anyways enough of my babbling, i picked up my phone and called my fave ladies spa (MB Hammam) to book an appointment for underarm waxing which cost 2000 Naira. I went along with my friend who just wanted to see what the place was like thanks to all the deserved hype i had been making about the spa.
We got there and I decided i might as well try the brazillian wax while i was at it. I changed in the dressing room and waited for the person to attend to me another room.

...and then she started, gaskia i no know who send me message o!!wey i for just dey use my shaving cream/stick jejely. She  first put some baby powder on my underarms and then rolled the hot wax ('cos it was not warm o!) on my underarm from some deodorant looking thing like that, all this time i was cool o, then she placed the strip where she had placed the wax, she  rubbed it for a bit and FIAMMMMMMMM she pulled it off!!!!! It hurt so bad I screamed inside me and clenched my teeth, i could see the hair that had once been on my underarms on the wax strip. The woman no even take easy or give me time to rest! She just dey wax, dey strip dey go. I don peme finish inside, i just dey pull brave face like sey e no too pain me. When she was done, i decided i ssssssoooooooo was not doin any brazillian. The pain had been bad enough here talkless of down there. While i was thinking all this i thot she was done o 'cos she
had moved her bright light and had put aside the strips...in my dreams o... she pulled out tweezers and plucked out all the stubborn ones that had not come off with the wax!! Aye mi o!! i had not planned for this. I told her i did not want to do the brazillian anymore cos the pain was too much, she just calmed me down and told me i had done very well for a first timer as others usually scream at the top of their voices. She said she'd give me some time to relax and if i still did not want to do it, there was no problem.
After relaxing for about 15mins i decided WTH lemme just get this over with! You know those comprehensions they used to make us write in Secondary School? the 'had i known' ones? well thats how my story turned out! HAD I KNOWN i would have left after doin my underarms. I will not bore you with the details but it was 10 times more painful than that of the underarms. Anyway i went back to work and by the time i closed i wasn't sore anymore and by the next day it was as if nothing had happened.

After all this drama i acted i had to ask the lady why waxing was better than shaving and she sed it does not make the area darker in color as shaving does and one does not get bumps. Trust me i did not take her word for it o. I googled her response when i came to the office and got similar responses, they said the hair grows out finer 'cos its removed from the roots when waxed compared to shaving so i guess she was telling the truth. I guess this wont me my last time there then, hopefully the next time will be less painful. i'll try to get the mini strips so i can try doin it myself. oh well..till then! i'll let you know how that goes.

Here are some useful links i found while surfing the net:
